Kohn advises abandoning class rules and all traditional means of trying to make students behave in particular ways.
To what extent do you agree with his suggestions?
I agree with his suggestions when there are a group of kids who can handle such responsibility. It's difficult to put your behavior management in the hands of your own students.
To what extent do you presently feel capable of teaching in the way he suggests?
Kohn suggests teaching in a constructivist way, which means students learn from experience, and not through the teacher. I feel students can always learn through their experiences, but they need the teacher to relate their experiences to the content being taught.
How would this work in the Elementary setting?
The behavior management system and instruction Kohn suggests, might work in the upper grades (fourth and fifth). The class would have to develop a level of respect for one another, and learn how to properly talk and work together. I feel like you'll always have a troubled student that wouldn't do well with this approach, and then what do you do? Make rules specifically for him? Now you're just singling him out.
