My Goals this Semester
During the duration of Fall 2014, my main goal was to design instruction for students to achieve mastery (FEAP 1a). I chose to focus on this aspect of teaching, because in my previous semesters of interning, I didn't truly feel as if my students mastered the content I was teaching. I collected data to document my growth in this area by having multiple formative assessments. Before the actual lesson began I collected some data of what they knew. During the lesson I collected more data to determine who was understanding, and from there divided them into groups based off of that data. And at the end of the lesson I gave an Exit Ticket that measured the content. I even used that Exit Ticket for the next day's lesson as it's formative assessment.
To achieve this goal, I've gotten feedback from my University Supervisor, telling me to allow more time for the students to talk among each other. I've definitely taken this feedback into consideration, by always allowing time within the lesson for students to talk to each other or sharing out loud.
I would say I achieved my goal based on the data collected. For mastery to happen, at least 80% of the students have to do 80% of their work correctly.
Since I've achieved my goal, I want to keep working on it. I feel as though I can never be done working on effective instruction so students can achieve mastery. The next goal I want to focus on primarily is differentiating instruction based on an assessment of student learning needs and recognition of individual differences in students (FEAP 3h). That's another goal I feel like I'll never be done developing with.
