From chapters 8 and 9 in the Cornett text I learned a couple of things that I can take back to summer internship. The first being, when you integrate drama within the curriculum, it develops empathy among the students. Multiple studies show when students take part in drama, it results in understanding character motivation; which in turn builds their comprehension of the text. Also, it shapes social skills; students learn when and how to listen, how to speak up without offending anyone, gain respect for the unique perspectives of classmates, etc. These are all really good social skills to have when interacting with people everyday.
*How can drama be used to enhance the curriculum?
Drama can be used to enhance the curriculum as a performance task. I think having students act out something instead of the traditional paper and pencil will give them an assessment to look forward to. I could even invite parents and friends to come watch the act.
