inform your teaching? What questions does the chapter and video raise for
you?
From the Cornett chapter and the video, I have noticed nothing but positive outcomes with integrating the arts. They mentioned different outcomes that students who take art education benefit from as follows: "cognitive ability, creative thinking and problem solving, tolerance and inclusion, social-emotional intelligence, language and verbal skills, and confidence and self-esteem" ; all of which needs to be taught. Separately, teachers try and lecture their students about theses skills, but if we were to integrate art within our subjects, it would be taught for us.
My question is, do teachers today realize how important art is? Does the Board of Education realize how important art is? If so, why isn't it being implemented more frequently in the classroom? Instead of having standardized tests to measure how much information students can easily guess or memorize, why aren't there state-wide performance tasks?
I really liked the idea in general about integrating the arts with the other subject areas.
For example, instead of having my students write up a research paper about an animal, I could have them make a powerpoint presentation and teach the class, or maybe come up with a poem, a drawing, etc. Having such assessments make it more enjoyable for the students as well as the teacher who's grading it.
